What to do when you don’t have a holiday coming up

This may seem like an odd thing to be writing about given I’ve just spent a wonderful week in Italy, but since I now don’t have anything planned until my trip to India in October, I am starting to get cabin fever already.

The problem with having a ‘secure’ job is that generally, your boss likes you to be there to, you know, work. That really puts paid to any idea of working from a beach or my hotel balcony like I have been doing the past week.

I figured since more and more people are going away less and less, either because they feel they can’t take the time away from work or they simply can’t afford it, I might share a few of my own tricks for feeling like you’ve had a holiday, even when you haven’t. Continue reading

5 Changes you can make at work today that will make your day better

When I say today, since today is actually Sunday, for most people I mean tomorrow, but tomorrow doesn’t sound as punchy. Anyway, you can do this tomorrow too, just don’t put it off ’til the day after that, or that, or that…

Let’s get right down to it then, if you work the normal office grind it can really get you down. Here are my five biggest helpers to get me through a long day feeling chilled – if you’ve got anymore, please share them in the comments section to help other readers too :-) Continue reading

Sam looking super cute!

The spirit of community (with special input from Sam, my Scottie dog)

Do you remember the last time you really felt part of something? Not on the outskirts looking in, wondering how best to get properly involved but right in the midst of it all, integral to a movement bigger than yourself?

When did you last feel supported? That there was somewhere to go where people understood what you were trying to achieve and didn’t tell you to be careful, or look at the bigger picture, or that it was wishful thinking? Continue reading

Why bigger isn’t always better

A lot of the stuff I read about following your dreams gives you the same advice – dream big or go home.

I bought in to this for a long time. Or maybe I misunderstood it. I dreamt big. I had big ideas. I wanted to do so much. I read everything I could. I researched. I planned. Then I….didn’t do a lot.

You see, the problem with dreaming big is that there’s an assumption that you have to also act big. Continue reading

Credit where credit’s due

When was the last time you celebrated something you’d accomplished?

When I asked myself this question yesterday, the answer didn’t surprise me. I couldn’t remember. After a while I came up with the fact I went for a meal when I got promoted in December. Woop-di-do.

It has come to my attention that most of us do gooding humans have a tendency to beat ourselves black and blue when we do something we think of as wrong but refuse to congratulate ourselves when something goes right. Continue reading

Questions to ask yourself for a life without regrets (aka free therapy)

Well Hello!

So it’s been a while since I gave away anything from my therapy toolbox so I figured I needed to change that. Not only am I giving away one of my favourite tools for changing your perspective and feeling good about your next steps, I’m also offering to give you personalised feedback and further questions to explore if you want to submit your form online (just drop me an email to say you’d like feedback once you’ve sent it). It’s completely free with no obligation.

Erin and I on our way in to London

How to make friends like a New Yorker (from the friend of one)

I was sat in my Italian class, a week after arriving in Italy to prove my worth to my parents in my new Italian Liaison role. I moved from the UK to Italy with no knowledge of Italy and, having only been there a couple of times previously, no knowledge of the culture. So far, it was a bit of a culture shock to say the least.

We’re half way through the class when the door flies open and a hot mess of a blonde bursts in and announces (in English – BIG no no in Italian class) that she’s sorry she’s late but she’s here now, which is the main thing. Continue reading
